Captured from the wild in Liberia as an infant in 1969, Samantha spent the next 12 years in private ownership before reaching the zoo in 1981. An infant male Bornean orangutan estimated to be just 2 months old was seized from a village in East Kotawaringin by a joint team from the Indonesia wildlife authority (BKSDA) and the Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP). Extremely weak and dehydrated, the orangutan was rushed to the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation’s Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Central Kalimantan, where he is receiving round-the-clock care.
