Debbie, a female chimpanzee who spent the first 5 years of her life as a pet living alongside a dog and a parrot and eating her meals at the family table, was euthanized this week at the Knoxville (USA) Zoo after a prolonged period of failing health. She was 45. Debbie arrived at the zoo in 1976 wearing a skirt and carrying a plastic purse, but eventually became the chimpanzee matriach. For more, visit http://buff.ly/2kuwGVA

Little Mama, a female chimpanzee who was captured from the wild in Africa as a juvenile in 1938 and spent almost 3 decades as a performer in shows such as Ice Capades, turned 79 years of age this week at the Lion Country Safari (USA) Zoo. Little Mama is believed to be the oldest captive chimpanzee in the world, and her diet of fruits, leafy greens, vegetables and high-calorie biscuits – coupled with iron supplements and omega 3 multivitamins – keeps her energetic.
