Many orangutans housed at Sepilok are young, and were rescued. Baby orangutans are the main targets of poachers, who sell them into the illegal pet trade or to wildlife parks.

An infant Bornean orangutan kept as a pet by a family on a houseboat in the Mentaya River in Central Kalimantan was confiscated today by the Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP), in collaboration with the Indonesian wildlife authority (BKSDA).
