The former head of the CITES in Guinea – who is implicated in the illegal export of over 100 chimpanzees and other endangered wildlife – has been arrested following a lengthy investigation by the Guinée-Application de la Loi Faunique (GALF), INTERPOL, and Guinea law enforcement officials. Radcliffe, a hybrid Bornean-Sumatran male orangutan who was born at the Toledo (USA) Zoo and then sold in the 1980s to a circus trainer, worked for many years in entertainment before winding up in roadside zoos in New York and Florida. 2nd GRASP - Ian Redmond Conservation Award Winner Feature: Edwin Sabuhoro (Rwanda) started his Eco-tourism initiatives targeting poachers under Iby’iwacu Cultural Village as a community based tourism initiative do discourage poaching bt offering alternative revenue generating activities. A new study by GRASP Scientific Commission member Marc Ancrenaz published in Oryx suggests that orangutans in Borneo are able to survive in oil palm plantations – and may not diminish the yield – provided patches of forest are nearby. Jambi, an adult Bornean-Sumatran male orangutan who lived his entire life at Mexico’s Chapultepec Zoo, died recently at the age of 25 of complications from pancreatitis.
