Marc Bartra Aregall, the Spanish international soccer star who plays for Borussia Dortmund in the German Bundesliga, has become the latest celebrity to thoughtlessly pose with a live great ape. Bartra was apparently “given” a chimpanzee as a Christmas gift last week while in Dubai, according to media reports. GRASP vehemently opposes the use of great apes as photo props or pets, and calls on Bartra to apologize for this misstep and ensure the chimpanzee is transferred permanently to a proper sanctuary. In “Planet of the Apes”, gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans speak like humans. In reality, they can’t speak at all because they have a higher larynx, or voice box, which means the resonating cavity between the soft palate and the larynx is too small to produce speech. Before they learn to speak, human babies are much the same. #greatapefacts #yourewelcomeinadvance http://ift.tt/2gZbxQe

A team in the UK wants to find out just how much energy our great ape cousins expend swinging through the jungle canopy. With the assistance of parkour athletes and an artificial canopy environment, their project explores the energy-expenditure decisions apes such as orangutans must make on a daily basis. Researchers have discovered that wild chimpanzees have been responsible for the dispersal of human-cultivated cocoa. Chimpanzees will ingest cacao pulp and spit out large seeds in the unripe part, or swallow them, so that they then are deposited in the faeces. The chimpanzees were capable of distributing seeds throughout their home range, to areas with increased light penetration, promoting plant survival and benefiting farmers. Something to ponder about over your hot chocolate this evening. http://buff.ly/2gj3c9S

Medical therapies such as vaccination have been used, or considered for use, in great apes for decades. Great apes have been treated for diseases resulting from their contact with humans, and small vaccinations have taken place in habituated populations to prevent human-borne diseases. Can this strategy work on a larger scale? Read more about Ebola and great apes here: http://buff.ly/2fHwuy4 #GRASP #EbolaBrochure
