Victoria, one of the few Grauer’s gorillas in captivity outside of Africa, died at the age of 47 recently after veterinarians at the Antwerp (Belgium) Zoo discovered an abscess in her throat that compounded her already poor physical condition. Born at the zoo in 1968, Victoria gave birth to one surviving daughter – Isabelle, who died in 1995 – but otherwise had been the constant companion of 25-year old Abalos since 1994.
