Mongo, a male chimpanzee who was known for the hereditary disease that left him essentially hairless, died this week at the Twycross (UK) Zoo while being treated for an infection. He was 22 years of age. Mongo suffered from alopecia, which he shared with his father, Jambo, but died under anesthesia while being examined for an enlarged air sac. The Orangutan Information Centre, Scorpion Indonesia, the Indonesian wildlife authority (BKSDA), and the Aceh police worked closely to rescue the orangutan, who had been hidden from sight following a first attempt at seizure in May. An infant female Sumatran orangutan who was being kept illegally as a pet in East Aceh was seized this week by Indonesian wildlife authorities (BKSDA) and the Orangutan Information Centre (OIC). Estimated to be 1 year of age, the orangutan was malnourished and weak, and was quickly sent to the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP) rehabilitation centre.
