Mongo, a male chimpanzee who was known for the hereditary disease that left him essentially hairless, died this week at the Twycross (UK) Zoo while being treated for an infection. He was 22 years of age. Mongo suffered from alopecia, which he shared with his father, Jambo, but died under anesthesia while being examined for an enlarged air sac. Lady, a Western Lowland gorilla who was the oldest inhabitant of the Al Ain (UAE) Zoo, died away this week from natural causes at the age of 41. Captured from the wild in Cameroon in 1974, Lady was the zoo’s sole gorilla once her companion, Maxi, died in 1998. In recent years, Lady shared her enclosure with rabbits and a wallaby. An infant male chimpanzee from Senegal who was left orphaned when his mother died of a snake bite in 2012 will be transferred this week to the Centre de Conservation pour Chimpanzes in neighboring Guinea. Nicknamed “Toto,” the chimpanzee was rescued by researchers from the Fongoli Savanna Chimpanzee Project, who provided round-the-clock care for 2 years until a permanent sanctuary could be found. Boy, a male chimpanzee who endured at least 175 anesthetic procedures and 20 liver biopsies in the 3 decades he spent in biomedical labs, turned an estimated 47 years of age this week at the Save the Chimps sanctuary in Louisiana, USA. Boy’s records are incomplete, but it is thought he was captured from the wild in Africa as an infant in the late 1960s.
