An infant female chimpanzee who was being offered for sale from a car in Freetown, Sierra Leone, was rescued this week by the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, where she will begin the rehabilitation process once she clears quarantine. Nicknamed “Sofie,” the chimpanzee was initially purchased by an American woman who wanted to save her from the bushmeat trade, even though that process often only exacerbates the illegal traffic.
