Manno, the juvenile chimpanzee who spent the past 4 years at a substandard zoo in Kurdistan after being smuggled into Iraq from Syria, reached Kenya this week, where he will be transferred permanently to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary near Mt. Kenya. Manno was released from Kurdistan after activists received the support of the Kurdish prime minister, allowing Animals Lebanon and the Project to End Great Ape Slavery (PEGAS) to arrange the relocation. Researchers have discovered that wild chimpanzees have been responsible for the dispersal of human-cultivated cocoa. Chimpanzees will ingest cacao pulp and spit out large seeds in the unripe part, or swallow them, so that they then are deposited in the faeces. The chimpanzees were capable of distributing seeds throughout their home range, to areas with increased light penetration, promoting plant survival and benefiting farmers. Something to ponder about over your hot chocolate this evening. http://buff.ly/2gj3c9S
