Laurence, a female chimpanzee who had been rescued from the pet trade as an infant and spent many years living at the a zoo in Cameroon before being transferred to the Ape Action Africa sanctuary in 1998, was euthanized this week after it was discovered she had inoperable cancer. Laurence developed into a leader and peacemaker among her group, and was an excellent mother to Zawadee (pictured), who was born 8 years ago.
