Kumba, a male Western Lowland gorilla who was captured from the wild in Africa as an infant in 1973 and ultimately became a dominant male at several European zoos, died Friday at the Antwerp (Belgium) Zoo at the age of 42. Kumba had become lethargic and lost his appetite in recent weeks, and was euthanized by zoo veterinarians when it became clear he would not recover.
