A United States court of appeals ruled this week that Tommy, a 40-year old chimpanzee who worked in entertainment for decades, is not entitled to human rights and does not have to be freed by his owner because he “cannot bear any legal duties.” The Nonhuman Rights Project had argued that chimpanzees who had such similar characteristics to the humans deserved basic rights, including freedom.
