An animal carry case that was left anonymously outside the Wildlife Friends of Thailand offices this week was found to have a juvenile female Bornean orangutan inside. It is thought the orangutan – nicknamed “Maggie” – was kept illegally as a pet but was abandoned when her owners realized the illegality of keeping a captive orangutan. Maggie’s appearance also emphasizes the illegal trade in apes that occurs throughout Southeast Asia. For more, visit http://buff.ly/1RmKtnO

Scarlett, a female chimpanzee who was born into biomedical research in 1979 in the USA and underwent hundreds of liver punch biopsies as part of blood tests and NIH protocols, died this week at the age of 47. Scarlett was wracked by deep depression and seizures at the time of her transfer to the Save the Chimps sanctuary in 2002, and ultimately suffered a seizure in 2008 that left her in a weakened state. But Scarlett loved sunshine, outdoors and male caretakers, and passed away in her sleep. For more, visit http://ift.tt/1QpAQSg http://ift.tt/1RbEdzj
