Eros, a male chimpanzee who ruled for 4 decades as the patriarch of the Basel Zoo, Switzerland, died recently at the age of 52. Eros arrived in Basel in 1969 and went on to produce 32 offspring, but is best known for a 1987 escape from the zoo when he scaled a nearby building and amused himself by hurling bricks from the roof. Clyde, a wild-caught chimpanzee who spent over four decades in a garage cage in the United States, just passed his 3rd anniversary at the Centre for Great Apes in Florida, USA. Upon arrival at the age of 45, Clyde was weak, emaciated and atrophied from a lack of exercise; today, 48-year old Clyde is fit and robust and a close companion of Toddy. Kudos to the Centre for Great Apes staff and to April Truitt of the Primate Rescue Centre, who facilitated his transfer. (Photos by April Truitt / Colleen Tyler Reed).
