An infant female Sumatran orangutan who was kept illegally as a pet in Aceh Barat Daya was confiscated this week by Indonesian wildlife authorities (BKDSA) and the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP). Nicknamed “Josh,” the orangutan is estimated to be less than a year old and is now undergoing quarantine at the SOCP rehabilitation centre before joining other orphans. Liz Williamson, PhD., who worked throughout Africa and Asia to help conserve chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos and orangutans, has resigned after a decade as vice chair of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Section on Great Apes (SGA). Dr. Williamson was director of the Karisoke Research Centre for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International in Rwanda for 6 years before joining the IUCN SSC Primate Specialist Group in 2005.
