A male chimpanzee who was severely injured in a clash with the alpha male at the Wellington (New Zealand) Zoo died during emergency surgery. Temba (pictured), a 21-year old, fought with Marty (28) and received a deep wound on the back of his leg, but failed to come out of his anesthesia during surgery and was euthanized. Tatu, a female chimpanzee who was part of the ground-breaking sign language communications study that included Washoe and 3 other chimpanzees in Washington, USA, turned 40 years of age this week. Chantek, a male Sumatran-Bornean hybrid orangutan who was born at the Yerkes Primate Research Centre and ultimately learned over 150 words in sign language, turned 38 years of age this week at Zoo Atlanta (USA). Chantek’s hands are so large he was forced to modify some signs in order to communicate properly, but now prefers to spend time painting and creating bead jewelry.
