Shufai, an orphaned Western Lowland gorilla at Ape Action Africa in Cameroon, is on the mend after undergoing surgery to amputate his left arm above the elbow. Injuries sustained during his capture in 2006 failed to heal, and gunshot pellets trapped inside his body caused his arm and wrist to develop poorly. Experts decided amputation was the only way to offer him a pain-free life. In this picture, Shufai jumps into the arms of his long-time caretaker, Apollinaire, shortly after surgery.
