An infant female chimpanzee who was likely orphaned as a recent surge in the bushmeat trade was seized this week from the Kangari Hills region and delivered to the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Sierra Leone. Nicknamed “Matilda,” the chimpanzee is estimated to be 4 months old, and is the 4th chimpanzee to arrive at the sanctuary thus far in 2016.
