Garbo “Grandma,” a female chimpanzee who was just days away from reaching her 62nd birthday, died this week at the Chimp Haven (USA) sanctuary. Grandma was born in a research laboratory in 1953, making her the oldest chimpanzee living in captivity with a known birthdate. After serving in research projects – and nurturing newborn chimpanzees, which earned her the nickname “Grandma” – she was retired to Chimp Haven in 2005, where she continued nurturing stuffed animals.
