La Vieille, a female chimpanzee who spent many years in captivity and isolation at a zoo in Congo before being transferred to the Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rescue Centre in 1992, died recently at the estimated age of 50. A long-time companion at Tchimpounga of the legendary Gregoire – who passed away at the age of 66 in 2008 – La Vieille also became the in-house foster mother to dozens of orphaned chimpanzees over the years.
