Another infant has been born to the group of orphaned chimpanzees reintroduced to the Parc National du Haut Niger in Guinea. Lottie, who was returned to the wild in 2008 and had a wild-born son one year later, gave birth to a daughter on May 30, making three infants now in this social group. Chimpanzees and bonobos are extremely emotional about their choices and are prone to emotional outbursts if choices or gambles do not pay off, according to a new Duke University study published in PLoS One. Researchers developed decision-making games that the apes played to earn edible treats, but when some lost - receiving a bland piece of cucumber rather than a preferred piece of banana – they reacted with what looked like the ape equivalent of a tantrum. Two of the last remaining “talking” chimpanzees will be moved from the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute (CHCI) in Washington, USA, to a sanctuary in Canada. Arvid, an orphaned chimpanzee who was paralyzed after contracting meningitis but continued to live a meaningful life through physical therapy treatments at the Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Centre in Cameroon, passed away recently. According to Sanaga-Yong founder Dr. Sheri Speede, “his body, which had become a frustrating prison, seemed to deteriorate more with each passing week. Mahal, a 5-year old male orangutan at the Milwaukee County Zoo, USA, who died suddenly in late December, apparently succumbed to a severe tapeworm infection, according to autopsy reports. Mahal made headlines after being rejected and abused by his birth mother at a Colorado zoo, then being raised by an older orangutan who later died. He moved to the Milwaukee County Zoo in 2008. When the animal was stricken last April he was taken to Victoria Hospital, Miami, Florida, by his owner, Edward Strassburg. Three-year-old Baboo received the same oxygen-tent treatment as humans. Toto Shows Affection for His Lifelong Mentor
Mrs. E. Kenneth Hoyt, of Havana, Cuba, acquired the gorilla in 1932 when he was three months old. Mr. Hoyt had just shot Toto’s father in the French Congo. African villagers, without the knowledge of the Hoyts, then killed the mother. Mrs. Hoyt, unwilling to see the baby die, procured an African nurse for the gorilla and he thrived on human milk.
