Mabéké, a male Western Lowland gorilla who was purchased from illegal traders in Gabon in the mid-1970s and went on to spend the rest of his life in captivity, died on May 26 from heart failure. He was believed to be 37 years of age. Mabéké’s last 14 years were spent at the Fernan-Vaz Gorilla Project sanctuary in Gabon, where he had been expected to move into a forested enclosure later this year.
