Debbie, a female chimpanzee who spent the first 5 years of her life as a pet living alongside a dog and a parrot and eating her meals at the family table, was euthanized this week at the Knoxville (USA) Zoo after a prolonged period of failing health. An infant Bornean orangutan being held illegally as a pet in a village compound in the Seruyan district of Central Kalimantan was seized this week by the Indonesia wildlife authority (BKSDA) and the Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP). Nicknamed “Mely,” the orangutan was discovered by a local high school student who then alerted authorities.
