Kin and Shasa, the two chimpanzees from the Kinshasa supermarket, would ordinarily still be with their families in the wild. At Lwiro Sanctuary, they are assigned a caregiver who can tend to their needs during their quarantine period, after which they can be introduced to the 55 other chimpanzees and develop more natural bonds.

A juvenile male Sumatran orangutan that had been kept illegally as a pet by a government official but escaped and spent a year wandering through Aceh’s farmlands with a rope around his neck was successfully captured and taken to the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP) rehabilitation centre.
