A juvenile male Sumatran orangutan that had been kept illegally as a pet by a government official but escaped and spent a year wandering through Aceh’s farmlands with a rope around his neck was successfully captured and taken to the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP) rehabilitation centre. The orangutan – estimated to be 5 years of age – was collected by the Orangutan Information Centre (OIC), the Indonesia wildlife authority (BKSDA) and SOCP, and is the 5th rescued by OIC this month.
