Yamato, a male Western Lowland gorilla who had been transferred to Japan’s Fukuoka City Zoo less than 2 months ago, died this week at the estimated age of 38. Yamato had been captured from the wild as an infant in 1977, and spent the rest of his life in Japanese zoos.
