Kanzi, the male bonobo who has learned to “speak” through the use of lexigrams and ultimately mastered more than 200 words, turned 35 years of age this week. Kanzi was born at Emory University’s Yerkes field station in the US but has lived at the Ape Cognition & Conservation Center in Iowa since 2006.
