Vila, a female Western Lowland gorilla who is one of the oldest of her species in captivity, turned 58 this week at the San Diego (USA) Zoo Safari Park. Vila was captured as an infant in the Congo in 1957, and hand-reared in the US. She has presided over 5 generations of offspring since moving to the zoo in 1975.
