Debbie, a female chimpanzee who spent the first 5 years of her life as a pet living alongside a dog and a parrot and eating her meals at the family table, was euthanized this week at the Knoxville (USA) Zoo after a prolonged period of failing health. An infant Bornean orangutan being held illegally as a pet in a village compound in the Seruyan district of Central Kalimantan was seized this week by the Indonesia wildlife authority (BKSDA) and the Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP). Nicknamed “Mely,” the orangutan was discovered by a local high school student who then alerted authorities. Josephine, a female Western Lowland gorilla who was the matriarch of the Miami (USA) Zoo group but better-known as the grandmother of Harambe, died this week at the age of 50. Josephine was captured from the wild in Africa as an infant in 1967, and was the property of the National Institutes of Health before reaching Miami in 1983.
