A recent study of the current Ebola outbreak in Guinea that spread throughout West Africa found that no great apes or other large mammals have thus far been affected by the disease, and, in fact, may have actually increased in population since the outbreak began 14 months ago. The study was published in the journal EMBO Molecular Medicine, and concludes that the consumption of large-game bushmeat – which often arrives smoked from region far outside the Ebola zone – is also an “unlikely source” for the outbreak.
