An infant male Sumatran orangutan who was kept illegally as a pet and suffering from malnourishment, dehydration, parasites and a skin infection, was seized recently following a joint operation between Indonesia wildlife authorities (BKSDA) and the Orangutan Information Centre (OIC). Nicknamed “Leo” – after actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who was visiting Sumatra at the time – the orangutan is currently receiving treatment at the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP) rehabilitation facility.
