Bantu, an adult male Western Lowland gorilla who had been scheduled to be transferred to the Guadalajara (Mexico) Zoo in order to initiate a breeding group, died of respiratory and cardiac problems at the Chapultepec (Mexico) Zoo this week as he was being prepared to move. Bantu was 25 years of age. More than 20 veterinarians and healthcare officials worked to revive the gorilla. Bantu spent his entire life in Mexican zoos, but had never produced any offspring.
