Unsustainable palm oil practices are devastating forest ecosystems in Borneo and Sumatra, and are beginning to expand across Africa. The conservation community can no longer afford to sit on the fence regarding the issue of oil-palm development in Africa. It needs to decide now between saying “no” to the industry, because of its negative impact on wildlife, or to say “yes – but.” Palm Oil Paradox recognizes that the industry is here to stay, and asks the conservation community to work constructively with responsible companies in Africa to ensure that lessons learned from Southeast Asia are implemented. This is a new approach which may take time to eunderstand, but it is essential to ensuring the safety and survival of chimpanzees, gorillas and bonobos.
