
Anakka, a male Western Lowland gorilla who had lived for over 2 decades at the Columbus (USA) Zoo, was euthanized this week after failing to recover from anesthesia following a routine medical procedure. He was 31 years of age, and had a history of heart disease. Anakka was born at the Philadelphia Zoo in 1985, but moved to Columbus when he was 8, and went on to produce 3 offspring.
