Elgin, a male chimpanzee who was one of the first offspring of former biomedical research chimpanzees that were resettled in the 1970s at Lion Country Safari, USA, turned 35 years of age this week. Although Elgin suffered from nervous disorders and recurring seizures in his youth, he is now an ad-hoc “uncle” in his social group. (Photo by Elaine McPherson).
