Nikki, an adult male chimpanzee who had been captured from the wild and kept as a pet in his native Liberia before being transferred to the Johannesburg (South Africa) Zoo and ultimately the JGI-Chimpanzee Eden sanctuary, was euthanized this week after it was discovered he was suffering from advanced stages of cancer. He was 31. Nikki wore human clothes and had his face shaved as a youngster, but grew into a strong and intelligent adult.
