Scarlett, a female chimpanzee who was born into biomedical research in 1979 in the USA and underwent hundreds of liver punch biopsies as part of blood tests and NIH protocols, died this week at the age of 47. Scarlett was wracked by deep depression and seizures at the time of her transfer to the Save the Chimps sanctuary in 2002, and ultimately suffered a seizure in 2008 that left her in a weakened state.
