New UN Environment executive director Erik Solheim identified critically endangered orangutans as needing greater support in his opening address at the 17th CITES Conference of the Parties that begins this week in South Africa. “Orangutans are living on just two islands – Borneo and Sumatra – and they cannot survive outside the rainforests,” Solheim said. “They are threatened by poaching, yes, but also by increasingly limited space. We need to step up and protect these species.” For more, visit http://buff.ly/2dhtmpr.
