A new study indicates that Indonesia lost 8.8 million hectares of rainforest in the 2000s, yet could have greatly reduced its greenhouse gas emissions had it implemented a moratorium on converting forests and peatland for agriculture earlier. The study, presented at climate talks in Qatar, was presented by Conservation International, and concludes that had Indonesia acted earlier, it could have cut 578 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions by reducing deforestation by 4.7 percent or 414,000 hectares during the period.
