Dalton, a male chimpanzee who had spent several decades in biomedical research before finally finding peace 6 years ago at the Save the Chimps sanctuary in Florida, USA, died recently of suspected heart failure at the age of 46. Although some believe Dalton was born in the wild in Africa around 1968, the lack of records can only trace his origin to 1977, the year he entered the NIH testing programme.
