Rwanda and the World Bank have signed a $9.5 million USD aid agreement to fund land management of the Gishwati and Mukura forests, which are home to the country’s last remaining wild chimpanzee populations. Rwanda will contribute another $2.6 million USD to the 5-year project, which will promote economic values to landscape management that go beyond local agricultural output, and include ecotourism and protection of water resources for energy and water supply.
