Eros, a male chimpanzee who ruled for 4 decades as the patriarch of the Basel Zoo, Switzerland, died recently at the age of 52. Eros arrived in Basel in 1969 and went on to produce 32 offspring, but is best known for a 1987 escape from the zoo when he scaled a nearby building and amused himself by hurling bricks from the roof.
