Katrina, a 12-year old Bornean orangutan who once was a pet of Malay royalty but now lives alone at the Lipis Zoo in Malaysia, has become the centre of a global campaign to improve her living conditions. Known informally as “The World’s Loneliest Orangutan,” Katrina’s case is championed by Upreshpal Singh, director of the Kuala Lumpur-based Friends of the Orangutans, who is seeking to move her to a wildlife sanctuary in Sarawak.
