Rukina, the former silverback Mountain gorilla who spent 11 years at the head of the Kyaguriro family in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, died this past week. He was estimated to be 31 years of age. Rukina – which means “playfyul” in the Rujiga language – is thought to have produced 10 offspring, and his family had grown to 21 members, including 8 females, at the time of his death.
