Chuckie, a hybrid male Borneo-Sumatra orangutan who was born in a zoo and spent over a decade performing in a circus where he was castrated in order for trainers to work him longer, turned 30 years of age this week at the Center for Great Apes sanctuary in Florida, USA. The lack of testosterone from Chuckie’s castration meant he never developed cheekpads nor long hair associated with adults. He arrived at the sanctuary in 2006.
