An infant male chimpanzee who was being held in the Walikale region of DR Congo was seized this week and transferred to the Lwiro Primate Rehabilitation Centre in South Kivu. Nicknamed “Pinga,” the chimpanzee’s rescue was delayed for weeks as Lwiro officials sought a safe way to enter the violent and unstable region, and were eventually assisted by the Virunga National Park staff.
