Foxie, a female chimpanzee who spent over 3 decades in bio-medical research as a hepatitis vaccine test subject before being transferred to the Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest (USA) in 2008, turned 40 years of age this week. Foxie was also used as a breeder to produce more chimpanzees – and often had her offspring taken away hours after birth – which could be why she now carries toy dolls wherever she goes.
