An infant female Bornean orangutan who was discovered crying in a cardboard box in Pulang Pisau Regency, Central Kalimantan, was seized recently by Indonesian wildlife authorities (BKSDA) and transferred to the Nayru Menteng Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Nicknamed “Mema,” the orangutan is estimated to be no more than 5 months old, and was found to have air rifle pellets in her hip and torso, indicating that her mother was likely shot and killed.
